Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in White River, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, and we have facilities across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body can be utilized. Hair tests are versatile, being able to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have seen increased use in drug testing procedures. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for companies enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and those on probation. A significant benefit of this method is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making deceit almost impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Employing hair testing as a method of analyzing drug and alcohol use has become highly regarded. Hair captures a long-duration record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Sampling hair from near the scalp can deliver an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. It is uncomplicated to gather, challenging to alter, and straightforward to convey.

Retrieving a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) proximal to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for assessment and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the event that scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. Reference to head hair denotes only scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes additional data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a fast, preliminary analysis for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most specimens, any positive results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Specimens that are initially positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

Should a specimen register as presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. At this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a notably intricate process.

Confirmation of positive screening results is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples suspected to be positive undergo washing as appropriate. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced chance of test manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably hard to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: They can reveal drug usage patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent substance intake: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair samples.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
