Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Wien, Wisconsin. Seeking a hair drug or alcohol test? Our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide prepared to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from your head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing options.

Lately, the approach to drug screening increasingly includes hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance drug policy employers, courts, and probationers now employ hair follicle tests. The chief advantage of this test is a prolonged detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with observation ensuring sample integrity and reducing cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts like a historical archive for these substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. Samples collected near the scalp can detect alcohol and drugs for a period of up to roughly 3 months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion with approximately 200 strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. The term 'head hair' specifically means scalp hair only, whereas 'body hair' includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial sample processing within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and correctly shipped, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug misuse. Although cost-effective, Screening must be followed by a confirmation to hold up in legal contexts. Samples with presumptive positive screens proceed to a secondary confirmation phase.

When a sample tests as a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, hair-based drug extraction occurs at lesser concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a more complex procedure.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques carry out Confirmation for any positive screen results. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the laboratory process is reviewed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for 90 days, exceeding the shorter detection spans of urine tests.
  • Cheating deterrent: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage across a span, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days post-consumption to appear in hair samples.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually evaluate the hair strand rather than the root beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
