Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wind Lake, Wisconsin. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in this area with centers across all cities Nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, although body hair may often substitute. Hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common component of drug testing processes. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair testing to standard urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, the legal system, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of the hair follicle drug test lies in its significantly extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, achieved through a supervised collection process that is challenging to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use—within the past 5 days—urine testing remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When clipped close to the scalp, it can provide an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5-inch comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a matching amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" includes other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes an initial, swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage for the majority of samples, a confirmation is necessary for a positive screen to hold up in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can chart a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the debate of hair follicle testing versus traditional urine tests in Wind Lake, WI, hair testing emerges as superior. The primary advantage lies in extended detection periods and consistency in results.

  • Detection Accuracy: Hair tests identify substances more reliably, capturing usage over months.
  • Cheat-Proof: Due to their nature, hair tests offer results difficult to manipulate.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Wind Lake, WI is noted for its ability to detect drug use over an extensive duration, providing data up to 90 days back.
This extended detection period offers employers a broad view of an applicant or employee's substance use history, crucial for making informed decisions. The method's capacity to review prolonged periods sets it apart.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing provides a substantially stronger shield against issues of sample tampering or adulteration in Wind Lake, WI. By collecting samples directly from the body, the opportunities for manipulation are minimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
