Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Winnebago, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and operates centers across cities nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can be used for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing requirements.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, minimizing the chances of tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by preserving biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for abused drugs. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be validated to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Winnebago, WI, triumphs over urine tests with its superior detection and dependability. Their extended detection window captures substance history beyond the brief urine test period. This reliability gives employers a clearer view of an individual's drug use behaviors.

Compared to urine tests, which can be influenced by recent diet and hydration, hair tests provide a more stable and accurate assessment. This gives hair testing an edge for employers valuing thoroughness and accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

The ability to detect drug use over an extended period is a key advantage of hair follicle testing in Winnebago, WI. Unlike other tests, hair follicle testing offers a detection window of up to 90 days, providing a detailed look into an individual’s substance use history.

This broader detection timeline enables employers to make informed decisions by understanding long-term substance use patterns, helping maintain a safe and drug-free workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
