Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wonewoc, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this type of testing, and maintains facilities across the country, including all major cities, for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair or body hair is necessary for the test, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies, the courts, and those on probation. The major benefit is the extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that minimizes cheating. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a thorough timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and narcotics. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil), is needed from near the scalp to yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first recorded into a laboratory’s system. This step encompasses confirming that the sample remains sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screen must be validated to be accepted in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using technologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a drug usage pattern across time, not merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
