Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair follicle drug testing services in Woodman, Wisconsin. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and maintain testing locations nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair analysis options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common over recent years. A range of stakeholders such as employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse authorities are choosing hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation prefer hair tests. A significant advantage is the longer detection time, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it challenging to manipulate. However, urine tests still provide precise detection for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair maintains a chronological record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the structures of the hair strand as it grows. When samples are obtained near the scalp, they can offer a detection period of up to almost three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and it is conveniently transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields approximately 100mg of hair, forming the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG extensions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It’s suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing a drug test result mainly includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation stages.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab system, which involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, positive screens must be substantiated to be legally acceptable. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reflects a timeline of drug usage, not only recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drug traces require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differentials can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
