Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Worcester, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair assessments. With centers located nationwide, we are equipped to conduct hair tests wherever you are. Typically, testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, and it can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to tailored testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred drug testing method. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over standard urine methods. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, by legal systems, and for individuals on probation. Hair follicle testing offers the benefit of a longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days, through a supervised collection process, making them cheat-proof. However, for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Considered a potent asset in identifying drug and alcohol usage, hair testing captures long-term histories of substance ingestion by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair snippet with about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, regarded as the prime sample for initial tests and confirmations. For EtG, supplemental testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested that 150mg of the specimen be attained. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's integration into the lab's system. This phase checks for proper sealing and shipping of the sample, creation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Thus, samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs pulled from hair is significantly lower compared to other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirms any positive Screening outcome. All presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Cheating challenges: Foiling a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical patterns: Captures a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
