Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Zoar, Wisconsin. For accurate hair drug or alcohol tests, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Lately, drug testing methods have expanded to favor hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse pros choose hair drug tests over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers rely on them. The main advantage is a longer detection period, usually up to 90 days, completed with an observed collection process, making cheating near impossible. Yet, for recent (5 days) drug use, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step involves verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data input not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use for many samples, confirmation is required for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations lower than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents more challenges.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus making the results more credible.
  • Historical insights: It can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
