Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Alpine, Wyoming. If seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing leads in hair analysis, with centers across every city Nationwide, ready to help with hair examinations. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is preferred, or body hair could be considered. Hair analysis detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing has often involved a hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair evaluations instead of typical urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by firms with stringent drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation. The main perk of hair testing is its extended detection span, often up to 90 days, performed in a supervised setting, and difficult to manipulate. Yet, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for spotting the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands offer a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can present an approximate three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is fairly challenging, and transportation is easy.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in width) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for both preliminary screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Referencing head hair denotes hair from the scalp specifically. "Body hair" encompasses all other varieties of hair (such as facial or axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test includes four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for abusive drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples returning a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result returned during Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It traces drug use patterns over time rather than detecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing costs generally exceed those of other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", this analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
