In Bitter Creek, Wyoming, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, they specialize in hair samples, with testing facilities available in every city across the nation. A sample usually demands 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair is also viable. Drug, alcohol/ETG, and tailor-made tests can be conducted using hair samples.

Over the past few years, drug testing techniques have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over the conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, or individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage is the extended detection period for substance use, which can extend to 90 days, and collecting samples is closely supervised, making cheating nearly impossible. For identifying drug use in the previous 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a lengthy record of alcohol and other substances, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 strands of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When indicating head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the early handling of a sample into a laboratory’s network. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lesser concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening represents the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers past data: It can present a pattern of drug consumption over a period, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Differing outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself scrutinizes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
