Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Burris, Wyoming. Need a hair or alcohol test? We’re experts in hair testing, with centers in various cities nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair screening solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often utilize hair tests. Hair follicle drug tests offer a significant advantage with an extended detection period lasting up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it highly difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have grown in recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair fiber captures biomarkers related to alcohol and drug intake, offering a prolonged account of usage. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 90-day detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to fabricate results, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (equatable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For testing involving EtG, add-ons, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. It is advisable to weigh the hair specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent amount of bodily hair might be utilized. Reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a laboratory setting are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the entry-level processing of a sample in a lab’s framework. This checks that the sample is sealed and sent properly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data input not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient measure to negate drug presence in most samples, any positives must be verified for them to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples indicating a positive result during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is flagged as positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced levels in comparison to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug assessments as the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for positively screened samples is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. Each phase of detailed laboratory testing from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug assays can reveal drug utilization for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine examinations which have a notably shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is markedly hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring accuracy in its outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: It reveals a timeline of drug usage patterns over time, far beyond recent usage scenarios.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be more costly than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: The conditions such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
