At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Carpenter, Wyoming. Our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is sufficient; alternatively, body hair may be used. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol, or customized to suit specific needs.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug screenings. They are becoming more common than urine tests among employers, courts, and professionals addressing substance abuse issues. This method supports strict no-drug policies by offering a detection window of up to 90 days and minimizing cheating chances. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis emerges as an effective instrument for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it affords nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is easy, comparatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, collecting an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample first enters a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra data not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening demand a confirmation step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations in comparison to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging practice.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is accomplished with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated through both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
