Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Farthing, Wyoming. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing these services. We have numerous testing centers across the nation that perform hair analysis. Typically, hair samples from the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing procedures. A variety of entities, including employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, now prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are highly favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for probation cases. A key advantage is their extended detection range of up to 90 days, coupled with observed collection methods, making tampering almost impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In context, head hair exclusively denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory's workflow. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and handled, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data entry that may be absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for illicit substances. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to negate drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is indicated during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, substances are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other options (ex. urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive Screening findings require Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It is exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical usage insight: It reveals patterns of substance use across time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limitation: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
