Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grand Encampment, Wyoming. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing, with facilities located across all U.S. cities for your convenience. Generally, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for substance detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests instead of the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period, typically lasting up to 90 days, and the difficulty in tampering with samples. However, for identifying drug use in the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by trapping biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. Collected close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We recommend weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the specimen to prep for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are washed before confirmation if needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It indicates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
