In Hillsdale, Wyoming, Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is what you seek, we offer specialized hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation for conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other unique testing options.
Over recent years, the method of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, involving an observed collection, and being nearly foolproof. Conversely, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains unmatched in accuracy.

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and other substances. Hair collected close to the scalp can provide a detection window of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.
A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The process for laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary Confirmation.
Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a more challenging methodology.
Confirmation of a positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a pre-confirmation wash if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.
