Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Leo, Wyoming. Should you require drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide with centers in various cities. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically needed. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, the trend for drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. This method is often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation conditions. The standout advantage is a more extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, with observed collection and minimal risk of tampering. However, for usage under five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal substance use for a period of up to 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When speaking of head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system, ensuring it was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. Although it serves as an economical method to rule out drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for judicial admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with much shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to deceive: Manipulating results of a hair drug test is extremely hard, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, not merely current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are usually costlier than other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself and not to the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
