In Lucerne, Wyoming, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our company has nationwide centers equipped to conduct these assessments. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is generally required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse specialists favor them over standard urine tests. These are preferred by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation entities. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. The observable collection process is tamper-resistant, although urine tests remain most accurate for detecting very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen mass of 150mg is advised. It’s recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be sourced. Reference to head hair specifies scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (inclusive of facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process clings to four primary laboratory steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with initially handling a sample within a laboratory structure. It ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment to identify substance abuse. Though cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening merits confirmation to stand in court. Samples with presumptive positive screening results necessitate further validation.

Should a specimen yield a preliminary positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those achievable with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screen involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historic insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug utilization over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
