In Manville, Wyoming, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we offer specialized services in hair analysis with locations across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for the test, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are shifting from urine tests to hair analysis. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs, thanks to a longer detection window of up to 90 days, its observed collection, and reduced risk of cheating. For detecting most recent drug use, under 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to around 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is preferred. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair imply scalp hair only. Body hair refers to hair from other regions (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves checking the sample's seal and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody documentation.

Screening consists of an initial basic check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug testing is one of the most complicated procedures.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical data: It displays a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
