Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, we have expertise in hair testing and provide services across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases use these tests for their extensive drug detection period of up to 90 days, their observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged account of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for the detection of alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a total of 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of drug test results encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive result must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is immensely difficult to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a trend of drug use over time, unlike just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
