At Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments are provided in Sage, Wyoming. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by a nationwide network of testing facilities. Typically, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffice. Hair assays can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specialized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been integrated into drug testing protocols. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this method over conventional urine tests. Hair tests serve institutions with stringent no-drug policies, court systems, and individuals under probation. A key advantage lies in its detection capacity extending up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, rendering tampering nearly impossible. For recent substance use detection, within five days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Through its structure, hair captures biomarkers within its growing strands, providing a long-term history for alcohol and drugs. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within a nearly three-month period. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) that are closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. By "head hair", we specifically mean scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four essential phases are involved in processing a laboratory drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates integrating a sample into the lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, but a positive screen necessitates further confirmation for courtroom validity. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be possibly positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results undergo washing as required before confirmation. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug testing is exceedingly hard to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Showcases historical usage: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over a span rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days post-consumption to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments examine the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
