Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in South Greeley, Wyoming. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we at Accredited Drug Testing specialize in hair analysis and have centers across all U.S. cities capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is utilized. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for substance screening. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists now often opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug use policies, legal systems, and probation officers. A significant advantage of hair drug testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it difficult to tamper with results. However, for detecting drug use in the immediate past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month span of alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We propose measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other hair forms (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data input beyond what an electronic chain of custody system may provide.

Screening provides a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening helps efficiently exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a timeline of drug use over time, instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
