Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing operates centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer it over traditional urine tests. It's favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation scenarios. The main advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a closely observed collection that minimizes the risk of tampering. However, urine tests still lead in detecting recent drug use, under five days.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol use. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows, hair provides an extended historical view of alcohol and drug consumption. Collected close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, not easily altered, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. We advocate for weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an immediate detection for substances of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples positively screened require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can pinpoint drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter span.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical data: It shows a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variances in outcomes: Hair dye and personal differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
