Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Verne, Wyoming. Need a hair or alcohol test? We excel in hair testing with centers nationwide, including all cities. Tests require about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. Employers, courts, and professionals prefer it to urine tests. Used by firms with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and on probation, its major advantage is a longer detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. With observed collection, it’s hard to tamper with, yet urine tests remain best for recent use (last 5 days).

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can present up to an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples presumed positive during Screening must undergo an additional confirmation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long duration for detection: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not just recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
