Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Walcott, Wyoming. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests, and we have centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or elsewhere on your body. Hair testing can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent for drug testing. Various employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. Its primary advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected in a monitored process, and nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term biomarker data within the strands of hair that grow. When hair is taken close to the roots, it offers roughly a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not accessible, a matching amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair mean scalp-specific hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's intake process into a lab's system. This procedure encompasses confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not completed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. As a cost-efficient method, Screening can eliminate drug use for most samples, but a positive result in Screening must be verified for legal purposes. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to perform.

To confirm any positive findings from screening, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation where applicable. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timespan.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus results are more reliable.
  • Tracks historical usage: It reveals drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
