Maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace goes beyond having a written policy and routine drug testing- it requires trained supervisors who can spot the signs of substance abuse and take appropriate action.

Why Supervisor Training Is Essential

Supervisors are often the first to notice signs of drug or alcohol impairment on the job. Our Reasonable Suspicion Training equips them with the tools to recognize physical and behavioral indicators of substance use and respond professionally and legally.
This training helps supervisors:
  • Detect impairment early to prevent accidents
  • Approach sensitive situations with confidence and care
  • Protect employee privacy while following proper procedures
  • Ensure actions are in line with company policy and legal requirements

DOT Compliance Requirement

If your organization falls under Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, this training isn’t optional, it's required for anyone supervising safety-sensitive employees.
According to 49 CFR Part 382.603, all supervisors of DOT-regulated safety-sensitive employees must receive at least 60 minutes of training on the signs and symptoms of drug use, and 60 minutes on alcohol misuse, to determine whether reasonable suspicion exists to require testing.
This regulation ensures supervisors are adequately prepared to identify potential impairment and take appropriate, compliant action.

For employers regulated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), an additional training component is required.
Per 49 CFR Part 219.11(g), supervisors must complete FRA-specific Reasonable Suspicion Training that includes:
  • A total of three hours of training is required, consisting of: one hour focused on identifying current physical, behavioral, and performance signs of likely drug use; one hour on recognizing similar indicators of probable alcohol use; and one hour on understanding how to determine whether an accident meets the criteria for post-accident testing.
This addendum ensures supervisors meet the stricter standards required in the railroad industry. Our course covers all requirements for DOT including FRA.

The Benefits for Your Business

Investing in supervisor training enhances more than just compliance- it boosts employee confidence, increases productivity, and improves employee retention. It also helps minimize the risk of legal liabilities tied to workplace accidents involving impaired employees.
By equipping your team with the right knowledge, you're not just checking a box- you’re creating a safer, more supportive work environment for everyone.
