New Jersey DOT Physical - What You Need to Know
A DOT physical is an all-encompassing health check mandated
by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for every commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver. This examination checks if drivers are physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of handling large vehicles safely on public roads. Conducted by a certified medical examiner (CME) from the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME), passing the test grants a DOT medical certificate, necessary for maintaining a valid CDL license under FMCSA rules. What is checked in a DOT Physical?
- Review of health history and medication check
- Vision test (corrective lenses acceptable; must meet minimum vision standards)
- Hearing check (by forced whisper or audio test)
- Examination of blood pressure and pulse
- Comprehensive physical check-up (general systems review)
- Urinalysis (specific gravity, protein, glucose levels)

Who needs a DOT Physical?
A valid DOT medical certificate is needed if you:
- Possess a commercial driver's license (CDL) - A, B, or C for interstate trade
- Operate a vehicle exceeding 10,001 lbs. GVWR in interstate trade
- Carry more than 8 passengers (for a fee) or over 15 passengers (not for a fee)
- Transport hazardous items requiring DOT-regulated placarding
- Are employed by DOT-regulated organizations such as FMCSA, FAA, FRA, FTA, or USCG where a DOT medical qualification is obligatory. New Jersey.

What Will Fail a DOT Physical?
Medical Conditions That Can Fail a DOT Physical
- Vision & Hearing: Less than 20/40 vision in both eyes, inability to distinguish traffic light colors, or inability to hear a forced whisper from 5 feet away.
- Blood Pressure & Heart Disease: Hypertension uncontrolled (≥180/110 mmHg), recent heart attack, uncontrolled angina, stroke, or an uncleared defibrillator.
- Diabetes: Uncontrolled diabetes resulting in low blood sugar episodes frequently or complications like neuropathy or impaired vision that hinder safe driving.
- Sleep Apnea & Respiratory Conditions: Untreated sleep apnea causing drowsiness during the day or severe lung conditions obstructing oxygenation.
- Neurological Conditions: Epilepsy or seizure disorders (unless exempt), or conditions leading to unconsciousness, dizziness, or uncontrolled shaking.
- Substance Misuse: Current illicit drug use, alcohol dependency, or abuse of prescription drugs impacting driving.
- Mental & Cognitive Disorders: Serious uncontrolled psychiatric conditions or cognitive impairments affecting judgment or reaction time.
Some matters might cause a temporary disqualification until medical documentation is supplied (controlled blood pressure, diabetes management). Others, like untreated seizures or defibrillators, are seen as permanently disqualifying by FMCSA.

This is by far the easiest
This is by far the easiest way to get my lab work ordered and paid for. The phone calls are short and to the point. They don’t try to push extra sales on you and when I walk in to the clinic I simply show my donor pass and with in a matter of minutes I’m done. I will continue to use ADT in the future.

Saved My CDL!
