Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Arley, Alabama. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled, with testing centers available in cities nationwide ready to conduct these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown, though body hair can also be used. Hair assessments can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specific analysis options.

Recently, there has been an increased reliance on the hair follicle method for drug screening. This approach has been adopted by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse authorities, replacing traditional urine analysis. Employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, as well as probation services, often choose hair testing. This method offers the advantage of a prolonged detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected in a supervised environment, making deception nearly impossible. However, for substance use detection within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a detailed history of alcohol and drug ingestion by trapping biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, comparatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent measure of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes authenticating the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Samples registering a presumptive positive in Screening call for further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at much subtler concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), positioning hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation whenever necessary. The cumulative laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection range.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Supplies longitudinal data: Shows a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strands rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
