Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Batesville, Alabama. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in every city nationwide able to conduct the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary, allowing us to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or create a customized test.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in substance screening processes. A hair drug test is now preferred over a urine test by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists. Employers with no drug use policy, courts, and probationers favor this test. Its key advantage is its extensive drug detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and high tamper resistance. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drugs consumed within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow, hair offers a prolonged history of substance usage. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, it’s less prone to tampering, and it can be shipped with ease.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the same thickness as a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process of deriving a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. It involves verifying that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial rapid check for drug abuse. Though a cost-effective approach to eliminate the majority of non-positive samples, a positive screening results must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other tests (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

To validate positive Screening outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage over a 90-day period, in contrast to urine tests which have a more restricted timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's exceptionally tough to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Won't show recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle found under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
