Accredited Drug Testing provides robust hair follicle drug testing services in Bluff Park, Alabama. Whether you need a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body for analysis. Various drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing options are available.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test method has gained popularity for drug screening. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer the hair test over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and probation services frequently use hair follicle drug testing. Its main advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed during collection, and its resistance to manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Considered a potent instrument in spotting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair offers approximately a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

By obtaining a 1.5-inch piece with roughly 200 hair strands (size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, you acquire 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for analyzing and verifying results. For EtG tests, extensions, or tests over 10 panels, it’s advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. In terms of head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a laboratory's database. This process confirms that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and concludes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug usage for the majority of samples, any positive screenings must be validated for courtroom acceptability. Presumptively positive samples from Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For samples indicating presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair testing the most complex drug screening method.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumptive positive samples undergo thorough washing as necessary before confirmation. Throughout the Accessioning to Confirmation process, the laboratory adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notoriously tough to cheat a hair drug test, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: The test records a timeline of drug usage, instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Detectable drug presence in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp, that is analyzed.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bluff Park, AL

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over the traditional urine test by demonstrating superior accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
