Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Chickasaw, Alabama. For those needing hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair assessments, available in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation individuals use hair tests due to their extended detection periods of up to 90 days, observed collection processes, and resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of hazardous substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair fiber. When sampled near the scalp, the hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for roughly a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the circumference of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precision. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, yet positive results require confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening do need further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are washed, if necessary, before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical perspective: Shows a pattern of substance use over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the technique examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior in Chickasaw, AL? Hair tests offer greater accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. They reveal a broader spectrum of drug use history while minimizing false negatives. The reliability and precision of hair tests surpass the outdated urine methods, providing clearer insights into an individual's substance habits.

Employers favor hair testing due to its longer detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests that capture short-term substance use, hair tests unveil a 90-day history, offering a comprehensive view for decision-making processes, emphasizing its superiority.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle drug test's extended detection window in Chickasaw, AL, offers unmatched oversight into an individual's drug history. Covering up to 90 days, employers gain a thorough understanding of potential employees' substance use habits, aiding in effective hiring decisions.

This extended period empowers employers to ensure a safer environment. By revealing long-term drug use patterns, hair tests help maintain workplace integrity, aligning with substance policies more efficiently than short-term urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Chickasaw, AL, hair follicle testing is a robust, tamper-resistant procedure that significantly mitigates sample adulteration risks. The integrity of hair samples ensures that the results are reliable and trustworthy, minimizing doubts regarding the sample's authenticity.

The observed collection process further secures test accuracy, as any attempt to manipulate the sample can be easily detected. This renders the hair follicle test a preferred choice among employers seeking assured reliability in their drug testing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
