At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle drug examinations in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, we are hair testing experts with centers in cities across the nation, ready to conduct your test. In most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Various substances, including alcohol/ETG, can be assessed through hair testing.

In recent times, the rise of the hair follicle drug test as a preferred method for drug screening has become evident. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor the hair test over the traditional urine analysis. This is particularly true for firms with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and those supervising probationers. The hallmark of the hair follicle test is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days. While extremely difficult to manipulate, it is coupled with an observed collection process. For drug usage within 5 days, however, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers a long-range historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward to perform, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specify scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into a lab's system. This process includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial brief assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In case a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to execute.

All positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a pattern of drug use across a period rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When placed alongside more conventional urine tests in Spanish Fort, AL, hair follicle testing demonstrates clear superiorities. One of the primary advantages is its ability to detect drug use over an extended timeframe, which urine tests cannot match. This extended window greatly enhances detection accuracy.

Employers who strive for stringent compliance with drug-free policies find hair testing invaluable. Unlike urine tests which may be compromised easily, hair testing offers an almost foolproof solution, mitigating risks associated with false negatives or tampering attempts. Its adept precision sets it apart in workplace settings.

Extended Detection Window

The strength of hair follicle testing in spotting drug use in Spanish Fort, AL lies in its extensive detection span. It provides a clear view of an individual’s substance use dating back up to 90 days. For employers, this comprehensive view allows for better-informed decisions on employee drug-use patterns and history.

With hair samples, organizations are equipped with a long-lasting overview, revealing consistent drug habits that shorter-detection methods might miss. This ensures informed staffing choices, aligning with internal policies for a more secure working environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
