Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Collbran, Alabama. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair-based assessments, with centers across all American cities equipped to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Recent years have seen a growing trend towards using hair follicle drug tests for evaluations. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored due to their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and are exceptionally challenging to falsify. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a compelling method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. The hair captures a lengthy record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample within a lab's system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further entries if not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for detecting drug misuse. While it's cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing detects drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter scope.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The process is highly resistant to cheating, ensuring more credible results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug use trends over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to find recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
