Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing services in East Escambia, Alabama. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, offering testing facilities in cities nationwide. A head or body hair of 1.5 to 2 inches is usually necessary. The tests can identify substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

Today, hair follicle testing is becoming a staple in drug testing methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor it over urine testing. It's especially endorsed by entities with strict no-drug-use standards and for those on probation. The standout feature of hair testing is its extended detection period, capturing drug usage up to 90 days in a monitored process, minimizing chances of evasion. However, urine testing remains the reliable choice for identifying drug use within a recent five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it develops. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period of up to three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed the ideal quantity for both analysis and validation. For EtG, supplemental analyses, or screenings encompassing more than 10 panels, gathering 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. When scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test outcome in a lab consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This phase includes ensuring the sample has been correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any requisite data entry that the electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening provides a primary assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally recognized. Any samples that appear positive from Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

If Screening presumes a sample to be positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to alternative methods like urine or oral fluids, thus making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Positive results in Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as dictated. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair benchmarks and the accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug utilization for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Sheds light on historical usage: These tests elucidate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
