In Edgewater, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing ensures quality service. We have centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests, which typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other hair testing needs.

Recently, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals have started favoring this approach over urine tests. Why? For starters, hair follicle tests provide a broader detection window, reaching up to 90 days. Distinctly rigorous, observed, and tough to cheat, they remain the gold standard for identifying past drug use. However, for detecting recent consumption within the last five days, a urine test might still be more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands can record a history of drug and alcohol use over time by capturing biomarkers within the growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. References to head hair imply only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample in a lab system. It ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and manages any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. As a cost-effective method, it helps rule out drug use in most samples; however, a positive result must be validated to be legally accepted. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Examination. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used for Confirmation of any positive screening test. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The complete lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: These tests illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing practices.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", this analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not on the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
