Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing available in Epes, Alabama. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we are experts in hair testing and maintain testing centers nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence for drug investigations. Entities including employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over urine tests. This testing is crucial for employers with strict no-drug-use policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. Key advantages include a 90-day drug detection window, observed collections, and difficulty to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most effective for detecting recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a vital tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is uncomplicated, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Although screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that are possibly positive during screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Varied results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
