Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Morgan, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and have facilities in all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, hair measurement of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffices. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and specialists in Substance Abuse are choosing hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is their ability to detect drug use over approximately 90 days in a supervised setting, making it nearly tamper-proof. For detection in the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain unrivaled.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures an extended timeline of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide up to about a three-month detection scope for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for preliminary tests and validation. For EtG, supplementary assessments, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the substance is advised. We advocate for weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be harvested. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases involved in the lab process of determining a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary processing of a sample into a lab's framework. This entails confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails an initial rapid inspection for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most intricate methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly tough to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the precision of results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can manifest a pattern of drug use across an extended period, not limited to recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be apparent in hair.
  • Expensiveness: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
