Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fyffe, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is your hair testing expert, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair tests can trace drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing requirements.

The practice of using hair follicle drug tests for screening has become increasingly popular in recent years. Several employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer a hair drug test to a conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle drug tesing is the choice for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The most significant advantage is the prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, with a secure collection process that prevents cheating. However, for detecting usage within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures and retains biomarkers within the fibers of a hair strand as it grows, offering a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can provide a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

By securing a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest the scalp, you can acquire 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests that exceed ten panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is suitable. When referring to head hair, we specify scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main steps in processing a drug test result at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This process involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is economical and can largely exclude substance use, confirmed positive results are necessary for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests offer detection of drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers insight into drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Fyffe, AL
Hair follicle testing offers wider detection compared to urine tests, thus providing a more reliable indicator of drug use. It surpasses traditional urine tests in accuracy and provides a comprehensive substance use history, strengthening its role as the superior option for employers seeking thorough screenings.

The longer detection window of hair follicle tests makes them more dependable for identifying prolonged substance use, setting them apart from the more limited detection capabilities of urine tests, thus ensuring enhanced reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers the ability to map out drug use over a more extended period, up to 90 days, delivering a detailed view of a person's substance use history in Fyffe, AL. This valuable insight helps employers gain a comprehensive understanding of a candidate or employee's substance use profile.

The extended detection span provided by hair follicle tests ensures that drug usage patterns are easily identifiable, enabling informed workplace decisions. This attribute marks a significant advantage for employers seeking detailed substance history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing serves as a deterrent against sample tampering, offering robust security and almost foolproof testing authenticity in Fyffe, AL. This reliability is a huge advantage for institutions seeking to ensure the cleanliness and integrity of their testing results.

With a resistance to alterations and adulteration, hair tests provide near-certain results, reducing manipulation risks greatly. This security helps maintain trust in the testing process and its outcomes, solidifying its credibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
