Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Geiger, Alabama. Whether you’re seeking a screening for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers located in cities nationwide ready to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Through our tests, substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG can be detected, with further options for specialized hair testing available.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly moved towards using hair follicle tests over the past few years. Hair drug testing is now preferred by various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests are favorable for policies with zero-tolerance to drug use, used within the judicial system, and for individuals on probation, as they offer a substantial detection window of drug consumption—up to 90 days—are conducted in a supervised environment, and offer strong resistance to tampering. Despite this, for drug use in the previous 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent instrument for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be acquired. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing consists of four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This entails ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples that appear positive during Screening must undergo an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is implemented using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: It can present a pattern of drug usage across a timeframe, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of detection for recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
