Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Haleburg, Alabama. When a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers located across the nation that can administer a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair tests are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair analysis options.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Those upholding zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation rely on hair tests. Hair follicle tests provide a longer detection range, up to 90 days, with observed collection processes that are difficult to falsify. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying substance abuse, including alcohol. Hair archives a long-term timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair should be gathered. In this context, head hair solely refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair indicates all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial process of incorporating a sample into a lab’s database. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although it offers a cost-effective means to exclude substance use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair analysis is a challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analysis. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before verification if required. The laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analysis can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug analysis is quite difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Reveals historical trends: It can illustrate patterns of substance use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability of detecting recent intake: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally bear higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test scrutinizes the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
