Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Heron Bay, Alabama. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing becomes evident with nationwide testing centers ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is used, allowing analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods are leaning more towards hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases are turning to hair follicle tests. The key advantage is the prolonged detection period, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection, making it very hard to cheat. The urine test, however, remains the most reliable for recent drug use up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by preserving biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests greater than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair means scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug presence. It is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples; however, positive Screenings must be verified to stand in legal proceedings. All presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows presumed positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the starting specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing a challenging practice.

Confirmation of a positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally tough to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Traceable usage pattern: It reveals a history of drug use over time, rather than just recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result deviations: Variables like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
