In Hueytown, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, their expertise lies in hair testing, and they operate testing facilities in cities across the country. Most often, hair from the crown of the head, 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair, can be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to unique needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now favor this method over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation authorities rely on it. Its key advantage lies in providing a lengthy detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collections nearly eliminating tampering, although urine tests remain best for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair's strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is incorporated into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most cases, positive screens need confirmation to be court-admissible. All samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumably positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are detached from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirming any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which display a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over an extended duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual variation in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Hueytown, AL, surpasses urine tests through extended detection periods and greater accuracy. While urine tests might identify drugs used in recent days, hair analysis presents up to 90 days of history. This breadth ensures a more comprehensive understanding of substance use.

The high accuracy of hair follicle testing also minimizes false negatives, a limitation often faced with urine testing. By mitigating these risks, hair testing provides dependable and trustworthy results, proving advantageous for stringent policies.

Extended Detection Window

Offering up to a 90-day detection window, hair follicle testing in Hueytown, AL, uncovers patterns of prolonged substance use. This extensive overview is invaluable for employers, providing insights into an individual's potential habits beyond the more limited frame offered by urine tests.

Employers can evaluate applicants or employees more comprehensively, understanding their past substance history. Every strand of hair becomes a timeline, indicating any drug use, thus supporting better-informed hiring or retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Hueytown, AL, dramatically reduces adulteration risks, making it a tamper-resistant choice. Unlike urine samples, where adulteration is more plausible, hair samples provide consistent and reliable data that remains unaffected by recent consumption of detox products or adulterants.

With hair tests, the integrity of samples is inherently protected. This assurance contributes to the reliability and accuracy of results, delivering peace of mind to employers and other stakeholders invested in truly reliable drug testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
