Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Kinston, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we're experts in this area and operate test centers across all cities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is usually sufficient for testing either from the head or body. Hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific configurations.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this method to standard urine testing. Hair tests are ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period, up to 90 days, observed collection process, and minimal chances of manipulation. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the more accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
