Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Opp, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been used for drug screenings. This method is often preferred by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over typical urine testing. The advantages of hair follicle tests include their use by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. A key benefit is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection, making it difficult to cheat. However, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a valuable method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a long-term timeline of substance use. Sampling hair close to the scalp can provide a detection timeframe of up to three months for various substances. The collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 strands (approximately pencil-sized) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent weight from body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, integrating the sample into the laboratory system. This process involves ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective, a positive screening result must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples that screen positive are required to undergo further confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods, like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is carried out via methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timeframes.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty of cheating on a hair drug test ensures more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug usage rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
