Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance screening in Long Island, Alabama. If you require hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we focus on such tests and have facilities nationwide capable of conducting them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle tests are increasingly favored for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationary programs use hair testing. Its main advantage is a longer, up to 90-day detection window, with observed collection minimizing tampering. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent 5-day drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended history of such substances by embedding biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month usage window for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

To obtain the ideal sample for initial screening and verification, a hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10 tests, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. It's important to note that when discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the lab's system. This phase involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, setting a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry that hasn’t come from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to stand legal scrutiny. Samples that are presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of conducting hair drug analysis.

To confirm any positive indications from Screening, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use over a 90-day span, while urine tests cover shorter durations.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The accuracy of hair drug tests is heightened due to their resistance to tampering.
  • Chronological substance use data: They can provide a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
