Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of conducting hair drug analysis.
To confirm any positive indications from Screening, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
