Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Louisville, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for all hair drug or alcohol testing needs. With facilities throughout all cities nationwide, our expertise in hair analysis ensures reliable results. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically required. Hair tests are adept at assessing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing requirements.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has risen, surpassing the traditional urine test in many settings. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse counselors increasingly opt for hair analysis. This method caters to zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial bodies, and probationary conditions, thanks to its 90-day detection capability. While urine tests excel for recent drug use detection within five days, hair testing offers a more tamper-proof and enduring solution.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the hair strands' fibers, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to a 3-month span. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. In discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This incorporates ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples with presumptive positive outcomes in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than through other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the difficulty of performing hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a reduced detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, as opposed to just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Louisville, AL, hair follicle testing clearly excels over traditional urine tests. With superior detection accuracy, hair tests present reliable results that withstand scrutiny. They detect a broader range of substances more effectively than urine testing.

The benefits of choosing hair tests extend to their reliability, making them exceptionally difficult to alter, unlike urine tests where tampering is common. Employers and individuals find significant value in this robust testing option.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
