Accredited Drug Testing offers in-depth hair follicle drug assessments in Manchester, Alabama. When a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, we excel in hair testing, with centers in every city Nationwide available to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized analysis choices.

Lately, drug testing practices have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over the usual urine analysis. This type of testing is used by companies with strict drug policies, the legal system, and probation-specific screenings. A hair test's main advantage lies in its extended detection ability, generally up to 90 days, using a supervised collection method, and making it hard to tamper. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by retaining biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When hair close to the scalp is tested, it can reveal alcohol and drug traces for up to about three months. The sample collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

By collecting a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands from the scalp (roughly equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil), one can obtain 100mg of hair, which is optimal for conducting screenings and confirmations. For tests like EtG, auxiliary tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the collected specimens. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair, on the other hand, includes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in laboratories involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into the laboratory system. This requires checking that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any pending data entry that isn't supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a quick, initial drug abuse test. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive screening result must be verified for legal acceptance. Hence, samples that show positive indications during Screening require a confirmatory test.

Should a sample return a positive indication during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid analyses, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

The confirmation of a positive screening result takes place using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have shorter detection timeframes.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Historical consumption patterns: Provides insight into drug use patterns over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors such as the color of the hair and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Manchester, AL, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. This method provides superior detection accuracy and reliability, making it an increasingly popular choice. Compared to urine tests, hair tests boast a wider detection window and are less prone to manipulation, ensuring trustworthy results. The precision of hair testing justifies its preference among employers concerned with maintaining drug-free workplaces.

The enhanced detection capability of hair follicle tests permits a comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance use over time. Unlike more conventional urine tests, a hair analysis ensures results that are both reliable and tamper-resistant, enhancing the integrity of workplace drug policies. Such reliability positions hair tests as a preferred choice for employers and legal entities alike.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Manchester, AL, is its extended detection window, which can reveal substance use for up to 90 days. This offers employers a more comprehensive understanding of an applicant's or employee's history with substances. By employing hair tests, businesses gain valuable insights into an individual's drug use, allowing for informed hiring and management decisions.

The long detection period of hair tests significantly contrasts with other testing methods, such as urine analyses, which can only detect more recent usage. Employers in Manchester rely on the comprehensive nature of hair follicle testing to ensure a safer and more informed workplace. The extended detection window reinforces the value of this testing method as a key tool in evaluating long-term substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Manchester, AL, are recognized for their tamper-resistant nature, drastically reducing the chances of sample adulteration. The structure of hair strands contains historical substance use data that is difficult to alter, thus providing reliable and indisputable results. This method gives both employers and legal entities confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the testing outcomes.

The inherent characteristics of hair samples mean that they are less susceptible to manipulation compared to other specimen types. Employers seeking indisputable results prefer hair follicle testing, which offers a higher level of assurance due to its tamper-resistant qualities. The credibility of the testing outcomes reinforces trust in the drug-testing processes utilized within Manchester’s community.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
