Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Maytown, Alabama. When in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing provides expertise in hair examinations, with facilities Nationwide ready to conduct a test. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for this over the typical urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals find this method beneficial. Its main advantage is the prolonged drug detection period, typically up to 90 days. It involves an observed collection process, making it highly reliable. Still, for drug use detection within five days, the urine test remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Hair obtained close to the scalp allows detection of drugs and alcohol for nearly a 3-month period. The collection process is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting roughly of 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal amount for both testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advised. We recommend weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This procedure includes affirming that the sample was securely sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive result needs verification for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge among methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use over a 90-day window, unlike urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Resilient against tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug use patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs are discernible in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests, particularly in Maytown, AL. Superior detection accuracy and reliability set hair tests apart. While both methods aim to provide insights into a person's drug use, hair testing can reveal broader patterns of use, granting employers a clearer picture of an individual's lifestyle choices and habits over a longer period.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
