Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oakman, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug test or an alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing centers spread across all cities Nationwide, we are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be analyzed for substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in substance testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation situations, hair follicle tests offer a significant benefit: a longer detection timeframe for drug use, often up to 90 days. The test is performed under observation, making it highly resistant to falsification. However, for recent drug use detection, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the standard of accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps within the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of concern. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive result requires verification to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Any samples that test positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, hence, the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests with traditional urine tests, the former significantly outshines the latter in many areas. In Oakman, AL, these tests are preferred because hair tests cover a broader detection window, offering evidence of drug use over months. While urine tests provide a snapshot of recent use, hair testing reveals a longer history, providing a comprehensive substance profile, enhancing accuracy and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Oakman, AL, often prefer hair follicle testing because it offers a detection window of up to 90 days. This extended timeframe provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, which is invaluable for employers wishing to maintain a drug-free environment. By offering insights that span beyond the brief window provided by urine tests, hair testing ensures a more thorough assessment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test is a tamper-resistant method of drug detection widely used in Oakman, AL, due to its reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can sometimes be adulterated or substituted, hair tests are conducted under close supervision, significantly minimizing the chance of sample tampering. The results from hair testing are therefore trustworthy and provide a clear picture of an individual's substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
