Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair assessments is available across numerous cities Nationwide, equipped to execute a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is adequate. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing preferences.

Recently, the approach to drug evaluations has seen a shift towards hair follicle testing. Companies, courts, and substance abuse advisors are opting for hair assessments over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation officers prefer hair testing due to its extended detection span of up to 90 days, coupled with the observed collection method, making it difficult to tamper with. However, urine testing remains the most precise for substances used in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by holding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection duration of up to roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. It’s easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. “Head hair” references only scalp hair, while “body hair” pertains to all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for abused drugs. While it efficiently excludes drug usage in most cases, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historic data: It presents a timeline of drug usage over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection for recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
