Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Prichard, Alabama. For individuals requiring drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our centers, available nationwide, specialize in such assessments. Typically, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffices for testing. Our hair testing options can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized tests.

In the last few years, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair samples over urine ones. Hair follicle drug tests suit entities like zero-tolerance employers, legal authorities, and those on probation. Its main advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days using a supervised collection method, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine remains more effective for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and substance use. Hair serves as a chronological archive of alcohol and drugs, locking in biomarkers within the structure of the hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the head yields 100mg, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG supplements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest assessing the sample weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair might be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was securely sealed and properly sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes additional data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for substance misuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to discount drug consumption in most cases, a positive screening result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test positive presumptively during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair test is very challenging to falsify, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides chronological usage insight: It can track a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
